By the Trade and For the Trade
The Madras Jewellers & Diamond Merchants Association was established on 11th February 1938 with humble beginning of 14 illustrious jewellers. The Association was housed initially at 24/25, China Bazaar Road and later shifted to 220(New N.S.C.Bose Road) China Bazaar Road, where on November 20, 1940, the Diamond Madyastham Weighment Section was inaugurated by Sri Vummidi Anantham Chetty.
We entered the present new premises, No.2, Car Street, N.S.C. Bose Road, Chennai - 600 017 on January 1, 1942 and a New Chapter in the history of the association has began on that day. The Madras Jewellers & Diamond Merchants Association has grown to reach a strong membership of more than 650 jewellers. It is indeed commendable that the association, due to its system and discipline instilled into the trade, has earned the recognition from the Government to be treated as a Trade body on the par of the Chambers of Commerce.
With the intention to further Jewellery Trade in South India, the Madras Jewellers & Diamond Merchants Association took the initiative to organize the first ever Jewellery Business-to-Business Trade Exhibition in South India in Chennai in May 2005 entitled 'Gold Jewellery India International Exhibition (GJIIE)'. The Hon. Finance Minister, Shri. P. Chidambaram was a part of the presentation of GJIIE 2005. This was followed by the 2nd Edition of GJIIE in February 2006. The 2nd Edition of GJIIE 2006 had more participants and visitors thereby gaining popularity amongst the trade. The 2nd Edition of GJJIIE was popularly amongst the trade and was inaugurated by Dr.Kamal Hassan, the famous Cine Star of South India and also by the Hon.Governor of Tamilnadu, Shri Surjit Singh Barnala. Both the Exhibitors as well as the Visitors were happy with the response. Many accolades have come to MJDMA for taking such an initiative to grow the jewellery trade in South India. Our motto for the exhibition is For the Trade and By the Trade.
The 3rd Edition of GJIIE held between March 2nd and 5th, 2007 saw 150 Exhibitors - nearly half repeat attendees from Tamil Nadu, Jaipur, Kolkata, Kerala & Mumbai. Most gold jewellery exhibitors said business had been good to excellent, with serious queries from small towns in Tamil Nadu and AndhraPradesh. The 20 exhibitors from the Kerala Pavilion were extremely happy with queries from Madhurai, Chennai & Salem. Lightweight Gold Jewellery was much sought after.
MJDMA now presents the 4th Edition of GJIIE 2008 with more exhibitors and increased number of visitors owing to the immense popularity gained by the exhibition over the past three years.
